ANNIE JIN WANG is a dramaturg and generative artist for new plays, musicals, and opera. From the development of new works to revitalizing classic texts for today’s audiences, her body of work primarily investigates constructs of race, gender, and citizenship. Her collaborative approach is dynamic, compassionate, and rigorous, drawing upon a diverse range of artistic traditions and globally-informed touchpoints to support and expand the creative processes of artists at all stages of their practice. Annie is celebrated for the deep relationships she fosters with her artistic collaborators, as well as for her versatility in working across disciplines and forms; in addition to live performance, she has facilitated development and revision processes for film, television, literature, and game design.
Recent notable collaborations include Hildegard by Sarah Kirkland Snider (NY Times’ Critics Pick), Legendary by Cheeyang Ng (Relentless Award Finalist), and Salesman 之死 by Jeremy Tiang (Obie Award for Best New Play). Her collaborators have additionally received recognition from The Public’s Emerging Writers Group, Live & In Color, Ensemble Studio Theatre, and the Bay Area Playwrights Foundation, among others. She is a frequent collaborator with Beth Morrison Projects, Musical Theatre Factory, the O’Neill National Theatre Center, and the Playwrights’ Center.
As a dramaturg, Annie is currently supporting new projects in development at Beth Morrison Projects, Signature Theatre, and East West Players. Her collaborators have received recognition from the The Public’s Emerging Writers Group, Musical Theatre Factory, Live & In Color, Ensemble Studio Theatre, The O’Neill National Playwrights and Musical Theatre Conferences, the Playwrights’ Center, and the Bay Area Playwrights Foundation, among others.
As a generative artist, Annie is an inaugural recipient of the Wellesley Repertory Theatre Grant. She was a member of the 2022-23 Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab with Carolina Đỗ, and has received a Target Margin Space residency with Cinthia Chen. Her writing has also been developed with Fresh Ground Pepper and she was a member of the inaugural PlayGround-NY Writers’ Pool. Recent publications include The Brooklyn Rail.
Annie is the Associate Artistic Director at East West Players. Previously, she served as Associate Director for Artistic Programming at PlayCo and Artistic Associate at Theater Mu, where she co-facilitated the Mu Emerging Playwrights’ Circle. She has also served as guest faculty at BerkleeNYC and adjunct faculty at Marymount Manhattan College. Annie holds an MFA in Dramaturgy from Columbia University School of the Arts and BAs in Art History & Cinema and Media Studies from Wellesley College.
She supports, among many other causes, ending cash bail and reclaiming food sovereignty in the US.
